Early morning preparation can lead to a secure and confident preschool student. Preschoolers are in the midst of a rich developmental period of their lives. By providing your child with a successful morning start, you are setting up a foundation for the rest of his or her day and potentially, their life. After all, how many adults do you know who dread waking up? This is simply because these adults have never gotten into the habit of having a secure and positive morning.
Begin at Night
The routine begins with the parent. Take some careful effort into making sure that your child is a part in the process. At night, you may want to ask your child what he or she wants for snack and lunch. Let your child help coordinate his or her snack and lunch. You may also want to set aside an outfit for your child. You can also ask your child what he or she feels like wearing. By having your child present in preparation for the next day, you’re letting them know that food and clothes don’t magically pop up overnight.
The Morning
Have your child wake up to an alarm at the same exact time. At the beginning, you can assist your child in a routine of your choice; however, it may be a good idea to allow your child to continue the routine in an independent manner. Just like the previous night, you can ask your child what he or she wants for breakfast. Plan the time and have them help you prepare breakfast.
Positive Affirmations
Whether it’s the evening or the morning, you can amp up your child’s confidence by encouraging positive language. Let your child know that he or she will have a great day. You may be surprised what a little consistent positivity in the mornings can do for both you and your child.
