Whether or not you envision your child to be the next Picasso, art is an important part of your child’s developmental process. Having hands-on activities can allow your child to exercise creativity and expand the imagination. If your child is awaiting his or her first day of preschool, you can utilize these tips as a form of preparation. If your child is already in preschool, you can help further explore his or her creativity. Either way, introducing your child to a world of art and beauty can be beneficial in all aspects of life.

Stock Up
Include art at home. Purchase a plethora of inexpensive materials, including crayons, markers, glue, construction paper, play dough and more. Better yet, invite your child to the store, so that he or she can pick and choose the materials. This not only provides your child with the freedom of expression, but also the freedom of choice.

Create
Let your child have the ability to create a wonderful end product by having no expectations of perfection. This perspective helps build your child’s creativity and confidence, while lowering levels of self-criticism. Also, have your child involved with set-up and clean-up. This allows your child to recognize the importance of accountability and also develops good habits.

Talk About Work
Ask your child questions. Your child will be able to reflect upon the creation process.

Display Work
Write your child’s name on the finished product and hang it on the refrigerator or around the house. You may even want to purchase an inexpensive frame to showcase your child’s favorite piece. This can provide your child with a sense of accomplishment.

Field Trip
Take your child to museums and art galleries. Gauge your child’s interest and excitement level to decide how long you should stay and when you should go.
